How can India improve it after what happened in Ukraine?

Let’s dive in and understand the current medical education system in India.

First, Covid-19 and what happened in Ukraine have been eye-openers. Fixing medical systems is a need of the hour for us.

India produces the most significant number of doctors globally than anywhere else.

Being home to one of the ancient medicinal systems in the world, there’s still a struggle to bring India’s recent medical education at par with other developed countries.

So many colleges in the country still haven’t reached formal education before the healthcare needs.

The problems in medical education were exposed as the pandemic hit the nation and saw the medical fraternity struggling to meet the abundance of doctors.

Although the medical system of India has developed phenomenally these past few decades.

The Indian medical system has gained a lot of attention in the medical world.

The worldly crisis of Covid-19 has been a challenge for all the health sectors around the globe.

The world is in turmoil in the medical field. And India lacks well-trained doctors.

The reason behind that is the rising problems in medical education in India.

The medical education system has taken quite a hit in these recent crises, and it’s been inevitable to close colleges and institutions to prevent the disease from spreading.

The examination was dragged on for months in many countries, but there were also cases of its cancellation.

And India, among many other countries, took a significant impact of the disease from which the medical education system was significantly severed, resulting in loss of academic learning, real-life practicals, delays in examinations, etc.

But later, many schools switched to online platforms for learning, and medical institutions, too, continued their consistency in education.

Outdated Teaching Method

The Indian medical system was already in need of long due changes.

As Indian medical system has recorded massive changes in the medical world, yet the matter remains the same in the syllabus.

Anyone who has a good memory and can store a lot of theories can quickly become a doctor in India.

Indian medical education system focuses more on testing the students based on their memorizing skills rather than medical knowledge.

Not only that, but as medicine makes breakthroughs regularly, the syllabus of medical education remains the same.

It is not updated accordingly, and the soon-to-be doctors barely touch upon new methods and scientific knowledge.

The outdated learning methods were also brought forth. The need to bring up the quality of education and reform the current Indian medical education system is now highly essential.

Even though the institutes in India manage to hire great professors and academicians, faculties still lack technical education.

There are also very few institutions that focus more on developing skills than just committing to theoretical learning.

To meet the international standards in the medical education system, India should emphasize more research than classroom learning.

Unlike developed countries, which focus more on research and evidence-based education.

India’s medical education system follows the course and teacher-centric pattern that lacks teaching the students a better understanding of their subject.

Researching is an integral part of medical education. Understanding the critical points to disease-relevant things with medical technology is vital for health care.

You can only strategize a treatment if you understand the patterns of disease.

The Indian medical system also lacks innovation. Because of the lack of innovation, no mind-blowing research’s been done here.

The world is progressing in the medical field with innovative research methods and developing technologies for better learning.

We need to adopt it too to compete with the developed countries.

3 Best Countries to Study Medicine

Shortage In Technology

The world is progressing and evolving every day in the medical field.

The invention of preventive medicine for various diseases can only be achieved through world-class medical technology.

Many developed countries spend a good amount of money on medical technology.

As students learn in teacher-centric methods, technology is applied much more than in foreign countries.

In India, there is an urgent need to facilitate students with technology resources to increase the quality of research and learning.

Importance of E-learning

Medical education is now more challenging as we transition from the classroom to online platforms.

There is an urgent need to adopt and facilitate e-learning, as digital learning is one of the medical sector’s biggest challenges.

It is not much for the private institutions but for government ones, with its limited resources have it harder.

Due to covid-19, students have been missing out on significant conferences that help them build up their capacities and efficiency in the medical field.

Also, the presentation given by students themselves is essential for their education and learning.

Now all these interactions are replaced by online lectures and live webinars.

Pandemics like these have taught us that we need to be prepared for any challenge, and switching to virtual learning has been a big challenge for Indian medical education.

Teaching methods should be before remote learning and virtual classrooms, which will make a tremendous difference in learning outcomes.

The coming medical colleges should make e-learning mandatory so that students can achieve remote learning.

As the current generation is getting used to online learning and equipping themselves with today’s technology, e-learning has benefited students.

If it is appropriately used, it has nothing but positive effects on the students if they properly participate in learning.

Indian medical education focuses more upon theoretical knowledge than practical knowledge, which results in upcoming doctors having an essential tendency to store curriculum knowledge more than any practicality, making them unable to commit socially and compassionately.

What’s more, according to statistics, many registered doctors in India are not even actively practicing.

More than 50 percent of practitioners lack proper medical education and qualification.

Sujatha Rao, India’s health secretary, once said:

“The market has been flooded with doctors so poorly trained, they are little better than quacks.”

The curriculum should consist of technical practice. Especially researching snd practicing should be an essential part of our syllabus.

Also, giving students some exposure to practical learning is crucial as providing hands-on experience at an earlier time is a must for their better education.

There is a lack of technical skills. Students need to be encouraged to have case-based education.

This method of medical education will help them have a more widespread understanding of their subject.

“The number of MBBS seats in the country has increased by 53% from 54,348 seats in 2014 to 83,275 seats in 2020.” According to the National Medical Commission

The above number is too small considering India’s population.

Thousands of students compete every year to secure themselves a medical seat.

Since the seats are so scarce, they give their all by putting themselves through hours of tuition and coaching classes and being devastated when they cannot achieve that goal.

They are cramming up piles of books and smearing their learning and memory.

With the limitations on medical seats, India struggles to meet the demand with its growing population.

Many students choose medical as a career but work with its lower number of seats and pursue something else or move their education to foreign countries.

Because of this, India loses so many students with the potential to develop countries.

Even though India produces many graduates, still the number is very insufficient according to the demand.

Also, the outmigration of the country’s most qualified doctors has made India the highest supplier of best physicians in the world.

According to statistics, more than 60 thousand Indian-trained doctors are serving in the UK.

There are over more than 1 million Indian doctors employed overseas, when here, India itself lacks to meet the number considering the population.

The country has to work on the rationale for medical seats.

But the government hasn’t stayed idle. The government has worked very hard to change India’s medical education system.

Many new colleges have been approved to be built over the years. In fact, in the history of India, the.

The number of government colleges is surpassing the number of private medical institutes.

It has also been working on boosting the quality of the medical education system by increasing the number of seats and reducing the cost of medical education, encouraging the country’s talented youth to take medicine.

This way, India will be producing more medical professionals, solving one of the most severe problems of the severe shortage of medical physicians.

The government has been pushing itself seriously to reform the medical education system. However, it will still take time to see through changes and development.

From upgrading the quality of the education system to meeting the requirements of well-trained doctors, India undoubtedly needs immediate changes.

We see that the Indian government is taking steps to meet the increasing demand for doctors and trying its best to improve the quality of education as much as possible.

However, there are ever so many things to change at one time.

For example, familiarising students with advanced technology and additional practical training so that they could provide proper healthcare even from a distance.

They should be advanced so much in modern science that they become able to put together medicine and help develop preventive care against new rising diseases.

The Indian medical education system has been continuously working to meet international medical standards.

And with the pandemic of covid-19, India has gotten an opportunity to up its game and adapt to any new medical scenario.

With the times being callous and teachers and students facing many difficulties, India now has a chance to change their country’s medical education and system for the better.

Sooner or later, India will be entering the league of leaders in medicine and health care.
