The role of a teacher and a parent are equally crucial for a child’s proper education and growth.

That result increases the percentage of students who do not get succeeded in school from per institutional perspective.

It is the need of the hour to acknowledge the problem and address the right solution.

Child’s Education And The Role Of Parents

Parents are often referred to as the first institution to which a child is introduced.

A child spends most of their time with their parents, who are the primary source of learning for them.

That is why surveys often conducted by different educational institutions have summarized that a child’s overall personality development and academic performance depend upon the training and attention they get from their parents.

The children having more academic achievement are the ones who get proper attention from their parents compared to children neglected by their parents.

Parents not being involved in their child’s school can negatively impact their children’s educational growth and future.

It is one of the most significant responsibilities of a parent to consider certain things that will help their children perform well in their educational journey.

Giving more time and attention to the child, encouraging them, giving them a conducive environment for study, being involved in their school, and many other things.

Parents need to take a keen interest in their child’s day-to-day activities and everything about their schooling.

Are Schools Directing that Parents are not Monitoring their Child’s Education?

The need for a good partnership between schools and parents to educate children may seem a minor task, but it is far more critical than you think.

Parents should realize how important it is to monitor their child’s progress and failure.

As sending them to school is not enough. There should be activities and strategies for parents to get involved in schools.

Meaningful participation of parents to support and assist along the journey is essential.

Previously, communication between parents and schools was much smoother, regular, and easy to maintain.

But as the times have become more complex and demanding, the relationship has not been the same.

There is a huge communication gap now. The parents do not have enough time to establish a working relationship with the educators on behalf of their child.

In response to a minor reaction from parents, the school authorities also take a step back to involve parents in any matters.

But this entire situation can improve by performing certain practices and by encouraging the concept of parents monitoring their child’s education.

Reasons Why Parents Can Not Monitor Their Child’s Education

Many kinds of research have shown over the years that parents are involved in their child’s school and educational activities.

The child tends to be more successful in their studies and other school activities.

Moreover, the schools that emphasize parental involvement and breach programs that include parent-child interaction have seen a significant boost in exceptional test scores and more prominent academic achievements.

But unfortunately, parents do not get involved in their child’s education and school.

There are several reasons why parents do not participate in their child’s schools and related educational interventions.

Addressing these reasons and finding a suitable solution is the need of the hour; otherwise, it will highly impact a child’s academic performance.

Following are the reasons why parents do not get involved in their child’s education and why schools are pointing out that parents cannot monitor the academic performance of their child anymore:-

Communication is the key to building a solid relationship with your child to achieve positive outcomes.

Then there is a good possibility that the parents will not show up to participate as they do not know about it.

On the other hand, when a child is in middle or high school, parents depend on them to bring information.

But most of the time, the child forgets or does not care enough to tell their parents.

Parents also are not responsible enough to communicate with the child or the school about any event or their child’s performance.

Keeping the school’s websites updated, making phone calls to parents during an event, discussing their child’s academic performance, and having an email system are some of the main ways to build good communication between parents and schools.

So, all this communication prevents parents from monitoring and participating in their child’s schools.

Working and jobs are considerable impediments to parental involvement in their child’s education.

There can be various reasons and issues why a parent cannot be involved in their child’s school due to work.

For example, functions or events held during morning hours often conflict with a parent working schedule.

Moreover, some parents work for two or even more jobs, so they can not attend any school activity irrespective of the plan.

To foster more parents’ involvement in school, the school needs to plan activities, events, result days, or other functions on such days and times that a working parent can adjust, like in the evenings.

Also, the parents should strategize or plan between their work and events to attend and be involved.

In today’s time, parents are so busy due to their jobs or other work that they are afraid to commit to any school event or activity as they think it will take too much of their time.

Long parent-teacher meetings, annual functions, or back-to-school nights, particularly on weekdays, make the parents bored and urge them to skip school activities.

They should focus on quality and not on the quantity of time. However, the parents, on the other hand, should understand that getting involved in their child’s school is very important and necessary.

It is as crucial as any other work, so they should take time out to attend school activities.

Sometimes parents assume that they are not welcomed or wanted by the educational institutions.

They often get unsure about whether they should be involved or not, mainly when their children are in either middle school or high school.

Parents think their teenage children do not want to see them at school or the school does not need them anymore.

Parents do not feel that they are capable of helping out their children in school activities.

Schools should try their best to make parents feel they are very much wanted or welcome to participate.

Fathers are especially more unsure how to get involved in their child’s school, while on the other hand, mothers find a way or two to get involved.

Developing programs that encourage Parental involvement and presence at the school is a great way to solve the problem.

At schools, English is the most used or preferred language out of all the others.

Parents with limited English skills or not comfortable with it often get reluctant to attend any school event or activity.

They do not participate in parent-teacher meetings as they do not understand what is being said and what they should say.

Most of the time, parents do not attend school functions or activities because the information was phoned or sent in English, which they do not understand properly.

Parents from different cultures and countries may not be able to use English as their first or second language.

Then the parents will be able to understand the data and increase their involvement in school.

Schools Emphasize Parents’ Involvement. Why?

Schools are addressing the problem of parents not being able to monitor their child’s academic performance in school.

They are not as involved as they should, affecting their child’s education and school performance.

Educational institutions alone cannot fulfill all the child’s developmental needs; the meaningful involvement of parents is a must responsibility.

Building a strong relationship between schools and parents to educate children may seem like a standard or minor motive, but it holds far more importance.

In earlier times, there was excellent communication between parents and teachers, which positively impacted their child’s studies.

But with time, society has become more complex and busier, and these relationships have fallen by the wayside.

Neither the school teachers nor the parents take time to get to know one another and discuss their child’s growth.

Children whose parents are more involved in their school are likely to have higher grades, great test performances, better social and educational skills, constantly attend school, and have good behavior.

So, here are some tips that will help a parent to be more involved in their child’s school:-

  • Parents should visit their child’s school once a month.
  • Parents should keep up to date with the school’s website to look for new notifications or events.
  • Parents should attend parent-teacher meetings regularly to know more about their child’s performance in school.
  • Parents should go to events and functions and get involved with their children in school projects as it will help build a strong relationship between the parents and children.

The parents do not try to get too much about their child’s academic life, which shows a tremendous negative response from society.

As students are becoming careless about their studies, they are much more interested in fun activities than going to school.

And that is why schools are taking the initiative to emphasize parental involvement.

So, they can monitor their child’s education much closer and attentively.
